It’s hard to imagine losing everything in a single moment. Your home, your sense of safety, and the life you’ve worked so hard to build. For one of our clients, that moment came the day her house caught fire.

She’s a mom with two young children and two beloved dogs, Talulah and Toph, both patients at Locke A. Taylor Veterinary Hospital. What started as a normal day quickly turned into a nightmare.

The Fire

When the fire broke out, Talulah was inside the house in a crate. Emergency responders provided life-saving care on site for smoke inhalation. He was then brought to our clinic for continued monitoring and eventually transferred to the ER for overnight observation.

Toph, who had actually been in for a visit earlier that same day, was with Mom when she ran inside the house. He followed her in but thankfully did not suffer any major injuries. Mom was hospitalized for several days due to smoke inhalation after putting her own safety at risk for her family.

Displaced, But Not Alone

The fire left the family without a home. Their belongings and sense of stability were gone. They are currently staying with Mom’s sister while trying to regain some sense of normalcy.

Although they lost so much, the family’s strength and love for one another, including their pets, never wavered.

How We Helped

We believe that healing goes beyond medicine. In addition to helping care for Talulah after the fire, we provided the family with a $500 gift to assist with the process of rebuilding.

This gift cannot replace what was lost, but it was our way of letting them know they were not alone.

Why It Matters

Pets are family. When disaster strikes, the impact is felt by every member of the household. Talulah and Toph didn’t understand why everything changed overnight. They just needed safety, comfort, and the familiar love of their people.

Thanks to the support of our donors, we were able to offer that care and provide a small step toward healing for a family facing unimaginable loss.
